the Milwaukee basement bar
also texts I've sent my parents and things I was surprised you can buy at costco
I moved to Milwaukee recently, but when I started looking for somewhere to live this past spring, I was floored, confused, amused, and ultimately landed on bemused by how common the existence of a built in bar in unfinished and semi finished basements in the Milwaukee area. And I don’t think I saw a single finished basement without a built in bar.
The dedication to drinking in the basement is truly unmatched.
this one is a little more finished but is still……very bar forward
what is going on in Milwaukee that this is what people did with their basements
the rope wrapped pole is a nice touch on this one as well as the green lights behind the bar.
My real question is who is standing behind these bars? the owner of the house? the stools rarely seem to be facing something like a TV to watch sports on so what is the social context and scenario that these are used?? I have no idea, but maybe I will be privileged enough to be invited to a true milwaukee-ian’s basement bar one day. Anyway, I do in fact now have a built in bar in my basement although it is none of those pictured here and I do not intend to ever stand behind it.
What was scarier than these basement bars was lighting the pilot light on my water heater for the first time. I’d never done it before and i followed the instructions and was still frightened.
It was fine, I have had hot water and not burned my house down so all good news there. Other topics have included why my cordless drill isnt working (jury still out), that mulch is expensive, that plants are expensive, and that paint is expensive.
Also turns out you can buy basically anything at costco and they will ship a lot of it to your house. So far after purchasing a home (not from costco unfortunately) I have purchased:
costco membership
washer and dryer
lightbulbs
furnace filter
toilet paper (the only one that didnt come wrapped in plastic was one they had to ship to my house)
new pillows (the avocado brand which were like $110 on the website but only $60 from costco and so far I do really like them)
a bidet (for the cost of 12 boxes of eco friendly toilet paper)
